Sabah is one of Southeast Asia’s great surprises. This little-know state on the northern tip of Borneo is home to the region’s highest mountain between the Himalayas and New Guinea, and also offers one of the world’s most superb dive sites. In its virgin rainforests and freshwater swamps, magnificent wildlife and rare plants abound, while the west coast is edged by mile after mile of glorious white-sand beach. Wendy Hutton introduces you to time-honoured attractions and her favourite, yet-to-be-discovered spots. Itineraries for day trips in and around the capital, Kota Kinabalu, are supplemented by longer excursions to the northwest and across the mountainous centre to the wildlife attractions and dive site of the east. Chapters on eating out, nighlife, shopping and sports, plus a practical information section covering travel essentials, complete this reader-friendly guide.
Wendy Hutton, who’s worked in Southest Asia as a writer and editor since 1967, first arrived in Sabah in the late 1970s. drawn by the magnet of Mount Kinabalu. On her return a decade later, she discovered the many other facets of this corner of Borneo, and has since made it her base, delighting in its unique wildlife, beautiful rainforests and incredibly welcoming people. “I don’t know any other place in Asia where the wildlife is so accessible, and where I am constantly delighted by so much variety, whether it’s people, lifestyles, sports or terrain”, says Hutton, who loves nothing better than exploring remote corners of the state. She shares her love of Sabah and her discoveries in these carefully-planned itineraries.
